X : What do you think about sustainable energy efficiency in IT?
Me : Not a lot. Efficiency is a short term win, however Jevons Paradox means we will just consume more. Energy consumption will go up and you really need to think about energy provision.
X : So energy provision is the key?
Me : Depends upon who you talk to? I know some VCs who think the solution is spaceships.
X : Spaceships?
Me : Yes. Of course just not for you, for them. You're the underclass. No-one cares about you.
X : I care about me!
Me : Well you should be doing something about it. You probably won't, I suspect most people in IT are apathetic to this - or if you like your truth less harsh, too focused on making money (mostly for VCs).
X : You're not seriously saying VCs are looking to escape the world with spaceships whilst leaving the world to rot?
Me : Of course, what else do you expect them to do? Elysium is a blueprint for our future until the underclass (i.e. you, me etc) do something about it.
... I do wonder if I should change X to Sheeple. Some people are clearly clueless.
X : People in IT aren't apathetic to environmental concerns.
Me : Seriously? I know of few places more apathetic to it, the focus is almost always on money. Take crypto currency, it's a laissez faire dream (sic nightmare) where environmental issues have flown out of the window.
... at best, you get a small niche of concerns and a chunk of offsetting due to marketing pressures. If you want a demonstration, then write a post on IT impact on the environment and listen to the silence unfold ... then just say something like ...
There's an awful lot of noise about containers at the moment despite the writing clearly on the wall that serverless is the future. I suspect the message that containers will become invisible subsystems doesn't help in raising VC funds.
