ok thread of tips for #Inktober, from someone who uses ink every day

this is aimed mostly at folks who are scared of ink/usually use digital or pencil
1. if you never use ink? start with ballpoint. that free pen you got from your dentist’s office or whatever. anything that’s got that kinda crunchy/sticky ink, not super liquid gel ink. notgood pic from google but pens like this
why? these act a lot like pencil- they’ll vary in value based on how much pressure you put on, which means you can lay down light guide lines if you need to
2. start small. draw what you’re comfortable with. you don’t need to feel obligated to experiment with subject, because you’re already experimenting with medium.
3. if something doesn’t work out, don’t get disappointed- get excited! that’s a learning experience! figure out how it went wrong and now you’ll know what to be careful about next time
4. related to 3, be nice to yourself- if you’re not experienced with ink it may take a while to really hit your stride. you may see what others are doing and get discouraged. proceed at your own pace and take comfortable risks
5. so you’re done with ballpoint and now you want to move to gel pens/liquid ink. and because you’re a badass, you’re not going to use guide lines of any kind, and you’re not going to undersketch it. BAD ASS. first time around? it’s gonna be hard.
absolutely not to say you can’t do it! but think of it like doing a skateboard trick. first time around, most likely, you will fall on your butt, because you’re in uncharted waters and your muscle memory just isn’t there yet
so! practice! start small and work your way up. it’s a learned skill, like all art, and that means you’ll get better the more you do it.
thats all i have rn, might add more later if i think of anything. have a fun n productive inktober!
