If Google has given a site free traffic for years and years, and then they decide to put things in the SERP that takes traffic away, I feel like that tough cookies. Ultimately google has given free traffic for years and still does, is it as much as it used to be, nope.
I can't help but equate it to charitable giving. Let's imagine that you were giving money to a charity (that you didn't have to), and lets say that was $10,000 per year, and you gave that every year for 10 years, then you had kids, and you wanted to invest in their growth
Intead of giving 10k yearly, you gave 5k?

I'm no Google fanboy, but I do find it intersting as to how easy it is to say what a company should do from a distance, by people who have no idea of the tradeoffs they are making. I mean YouTube is FREE I can only imagine the cost to run it. So if Google decides to monetize it
who am I to judge, then they use their monopoly power in search to do it. I don't LOVE it, but I understand it. I wonder how many people buy shares in Google / Amazon / Etc & applaud when the stocks go up as having made a great investment? What do you think made that stock go up?
Move your mail to outlook.com, search on bing or duck duck go, get an iPhone, use bing maps, etc etc. Create a movement to get others to do the same. Know you'll be getting sub par results at times but that is a small cost of standing up for what you believe in.
