Take responsibility for your cognitive investment. Is it worth it?
Be clear about how you’re going to deal with a possible betrayal, emotionally and otherwise. Imagine the best, but be prepared for the worst.
Know your lines in the sand.
Avoid trusting a person “in general”. Be specific about what you trust someone on and what you don't.
In relationships, the don'ts often are more important than the do's.
Understand that covert contracts exist only in your head. Make things explicit when something matters deeply to you.

Work on improving yourself daily, and your trust will only become more valuable.
