Today would have been JRR Tolkien's 127th birthday. He obviously has a huge legacy for Fantasy authors like me, & successive movements in Fantasy have largely sought to define themselves by how they're not Tolkien. New Weird, Grimdark, whatever we're doing now. I have thoughts!
There's no doubt there are lots of ways Fantasy can be Not Tolkien & very, very good. The success of the movies & the upcoming series show they're certainly the dominant lens through which the Western world views Fantasy. So I'm not saying his work is sacrosanct & above critique.
But amongst Fantasy authors it's something of a national sport to prove your credentials by asserting how shit/conservative/sentimental Tolkien is. That his work is some retrograde gravity well only the strong can resist. That being similar in any way is a failing.

Today's thread of NC 'early votes' as of 10-24-18 (note 2 different types: by mail & one-stop/in-person).

So far, 789K requests have been made for absentee ballots (both mail & in-person).

Of those, 716K have been returned & accepted (both mail & in-person).

Regarding NC accepted in-person ballots (that will be the majority of absentees): as has been noted over past few days, 2018 seems more of a 'presidential' year than a traditional mid-term.

But, 2018's daily total is beginning to slip behind 2016's daily total

2018's NC accepted absentee in-person ballots is at 93% of where 2016 stood this same day (reminder: one more extra day in 2018 than 2016).

Compared to 2014's final #s, 2018 is now 63% of that mid-term's final tally of a little over 1M absentee in-person ballots

1/ For whom a product is designed is an interesting question. Sounds easy…most say they know but…

Software people love to “build for myself” or “solve my problem” — those become products and companies—it can work.

But there are challenges to listening to yourself and team?
It is not uncommon for engineers and designers to start out believing “if we can’t please ourselves then we can please many more” when it comes to making a product. “If I like it, then others will too”.
In fact this “for me” is even codified in a “favorite” book of programmers, “The Fountainhead”.

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether
