How does history make sense? It's an important question. The best answer I've found - and there's no proving it - is that goodness grows. Consider slavery. 1776's Declaration states all men are created equal, while it's creators were slave owners. Yet, the Revolution was good.
The Civil War was horrible beyond description. Yet, the slaves were in fact freed. No, not to be equal partners in America yet, we needed 100 more years until the 1960's in order to win civil rights for all. But, it came. Goodness grew.
Stepping back a moment, WWII occurred, and evil reached what was perhaps its greatest expression, but it lost in the end. Then, in the decades that followed, there were many terrible wars, worst of all for America was Viet Nam. Yet, we won the Cold War.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying we're safe. Yet, if you look at the trajectory from WWII till now, you have to see that totalitarian states have suffered and are not very good at competing with free states. That's good!
So now, politics. America lost its way politically after WWII, and we allowed freedom to erode. We have allowed our constitution and our very rule of law to be battered. Yet, in 2016 #MAGA arose, and we won. We turned the slide around, at least for the time being.
And here we are now. Will we win again in 2018? Don't know. I think so, but I don't have the data to base my projection upon, so I just don't know. Yet, even if we lose, @realDonaldTrump will still be president, and he's done a great deal with little help so far.
Looking at the scenario where we lose these midterms, I know what I'll say. We fell back asleep a little, like hitting the snooze button on your alarm clock. We will then start waking back up again for 2020, and we'll be okay.
Of course my real vision is that we'll win. And picture that! More #MAGA senators, and a stronger #MAGA contingent in the house. There will be a new wind blowing in America if we do that. We have that chance. So I ask the following question, below...
Are we awake enough to grow the goodness now? Or, do we have to suffer a setback first, and rally again in a couple of years? In either case, goodness will grow. I believe that. But, I'm impatient. I want more of it now.
