The "nation state" has failed us, is failing us, & for a very simple reason: it is based lies, deceit & a regime of rewards & intimidation, the primary purpose of which is to facilitate society's self-exploitation to the personal advantage of its ruling elites & favoured clients.
These elites & favoured clients include everyone who is anyone in society, with any wealth, power or influence, incl. all politicians & the academics who teach them at university & advise them in office. All have a huge personal self-interest in defending the state & status quo.
Most of these elites & favoured clients mean well, often dedicating themselves to serving others or society at large, but without realising they are still part of the problem or that their good intentions often help pave the way to hell. They are not bad people, just misguided.
Most people get most of their satisfaction from serving their family, a vital part of which is making MONEY. The more money we make, the better we are able to serve them, or any other cause we are dedicated to, & the more satisfaction we get. This we need to ponder upon.
As a tribal animal, we are naturally motivated to serve our family & tribe & get huge satisfaction from doing so. It is this, far more than greed, which motivates people to make money, but far too often at the unintended expense of others, other tribes or future generations.
We can also derive satisfaction from helping strangers, or even animals, which is all well & good, but when we use money for this noble end, we need to be aware of how it is made & spent.
I am retired & live off a small pension, which the government pays me, having raised the money from taxation. Money that was made, I know not how, but within the context of an economy I know to be inherently unsustainable on our finite, vulnerable & overpopulated planet.
MONEY is the most versatile form of POWER, & power, we know, corrupts. The state, which nowadays legitimises itself by deceitfully posing as our nation, is largely responsible for managing this corruption.
Power does not always corrupt. For example, the power parents have over their children, because they love their children & want the best for them. The same applied to tribal leaders, when their tribes were small & they knew & cared for all its members. 
Clearly, we have a BIG problem. So big that one is inclined to shy away from it: things are working pretty well at the moment, so let's just carry on & hope for the best. This understandable attitude will, however, be the death of us. We must at least TRY to solve the problem.
In order to solve a problem, one must first acquire as good an understanding of it as possible. Such an understanding is what I am offering. It's not perfect (I'm still working on it), but it is a lot better than current academic understanding of socio-political reality.
I'm a bit of a scatter-brain (ADD) & have not yet succeeded in putting my insights & ideas into book-form, which is why I tout them here on Twitter. This is not the authoritative way to do things, I know (a book would be much better), but for the moment it is the best I can do.
