The NO side in referendum is making outrageous claims about representation, running ads that #ProRep will mean “time to say farewell to your local MLA” and “Pro Rep moves the balance of power in BC to Vancouver alone”. This is blatantly untrue, as I explain in this thread #bcpoli
These claims are a wilful misrepresentation of the 3 reform options on offer. Under all 3 pro pep models on the referendum ballot, EVERY MLA will remain accountable to either a local riding or a particular region of BC. Each system is structured to ensure this is so.
Moreover, each system on offer is designed to ensure that no region of the province will have fewer MLAs than it currently has. But it’s even better than that...
Right now, whole swaths of the province are frozen out of government, let alone cabinet. That’s because large chunks of the province only have NDP MLAs or only have Liberal MLAs. How is that good for representation? That would never happen under any pro rep system.
So switching to #ProRep will not shift “the balance of power to Vancouver alone” – quite the opposite. Every region will be better represented in gvt and cabinet.
But #ProRep also improves your representation because not only will you still have a close-by MLA, you will also have a near-by MLA who shares your political affinity. Never again will you have to go years with a local MLA who never votes the way you hoped.
So these ads being run by the NO side are fear-mongering distortions of the worse sort. Advocates of FPTP should be embarrassed to be associated with them. I wrote more about how local representation is actually enhanced by #ProRep here: policynote.ca/how-electoral-… #pr4bc
