Of all the things I find disturbing about contemporary discourse, I worry most about professing Christians' inability to change their minds & admit mistakes.
Changing our minds & admitting wrong is essential to conversion & spiritual growth. The gospel literally demands this of us.
If we do not know how to say "I made a mistake" in something as mundane as politics, how in heaven's name would we ever be willing to say it when our souls are on the line?
How in heaven's name could we ever admit wrong in our churches, our families, our friendships? How could we ever say to one another, "I'm sorry. I made a mistake"?
I'm not worried about political posturing so much as what our posturing reveals about our hearts. Digging in our heels to prove ourselves right is antithetical to the Christian gospel.
Christians are people who know how to change their minds. They are humble enough to learn & safe enough to grow.
What I truly fear is that our posturing reveals hearts unchanged by the gospel--hearts that have not yet learned the goodness of repentance & the safety of grace.
