I didn't understand the importance of midterms. I was in college in NY, away from my home state of IL. I didn't know how I'd vote.
I told myself it didn't matter b/c both IL + NY are blue states, so my vote wouldn't make a difference, right?
Despite believing that presidential elections matter — in 2012, life got in the way. I lost my mom 1 month out.
Again, I didn't know how to vote while at college. Besides, both NY and IL are blue, so my vote wouldn't make a difference, right?
Out of college, I had moved to LA, but I didn't know if I'd be there long, so where would I vote? Besides, I thought midterms didn't really matter. Besides, CA is a blue state, like IL and NY, so my vote wouldn't make a difference, would it?
It's embarrassing. I considered myself pretty informed. I went to a good school. I wasn't a stupid kid.
Yet, I always had a stupid reason not to vote, or life gave me one.
I was wrong.
I spent 2015 + 2016 glued to news source. Determined to be on top of everything. Refusing to be blind-sided.
I haven't looked back since. I continue to stay informed and share it w/ others.
Together, we fight for our democracy.
Perhaps, my story will talk sense into someone.
Either way, just know that had anyone simply asked me, or helped me figure it out...
I likely would've voted. #VoteBlue
I was one of the young people that didn't vote.
Maybe, all I needed was a little nudge.
I texted my cousin from Florida last week and helped him vote from abroad.
He wanted to vote, but didn't know how.
