Steve Bannon speaking to a crowd of 17 at the North Topeka Holiday Inn. And to think, the New Yorker Ideas Festival skipped on a chance to book this guy, a guy who clearly is in sync with the heartbeat of American politics.
Bannon has a girlfriend, but you wouldn't know her because she goes to a high school in the next town over.
Not to brag or anything, but I'm a nobody historian who gave a talk on the history of American conservatism at a bar in Salem, OR on a Wednesday night and 50 people showed up. Bannon, former WH staffer, can't draw more than 17 people a week before an election?!?!

Question for the news editors at the major networks. If you knew then what we know now about the Gulf of Tonkin incident, would you have broadcast this speech live? I think the answer is probably, "no way." Just keep that in mind tomorrow.
For those unfamiliar with this incident, it was the "attack" that LBJ used to justify ramping up US involvement in Vietnam. Later it became clear that LBJ's account of the attack was greatly distorted with the intent to deceive the American people. usni.org/magazines/nava…

1. The movement of people across borders is a constant in world history (though the rate and direction of movement has ebbed and flowed over time). This tweet, however, helped me see the urgent contemporary connection between current/future immigration policies & climate change.
2. Put most simply, the world can either strengthen & militarize borders to deal with coming climate migration (build walls), or they can engage in a collaborative process of rethinking how they want those borders to work, how porous they should be. The latter is very hard work.
3. The nation-state as an institution has in many ways been weakened recently, largely by the mechanisms of global capitalism, but I don't see many signs that nations will be disappearing any time soon. Thus, nations (possessing geographical borders) will continue to exist.

This is a really important point. As we glory in dunking on dumb old Grover, we must remember that he was probably *the most important and influential Republican operative* of the 1990s. He was a key agenda setter and "idea guy" for the GOP in the ages of Gingrich and W.
Grover's "billionaires are the new slaves" schtick is of course absurd...and it was also pretty much GOP dogma for much of my adult life. Grover is not speaking for some bizarro fringe element within the GOP, he basically ran the GOP in DC from behind the scenes for decades.

So no matter how much hateful evil shit he pumps out, he'll still get interviewed and enabled by our media, because their focus is on profit, not social responsibility.
And there's a twisted symbiosis going on where creatures like Bannon feed off the controversy they generate by spewing hateful evil shit, which makes the media even more likely to continue giving him a platform.
We see the name Steve Bannon and forget that it isn't just him. To get someone like this into the New Yorker festival, there's an army of people helping to make it happen, pushing Bannon into the media relentlessly.

Bannon wants to unite Europe's rightwing populists/far-Right & nationalist groups into coherent political force. He's setting up a foundation, which he compares to @georgesoros network, to help them with funding. But he'll only have up to 10 employees & no serious cash.
Europe's rightwing populists have tried to unite before, notably in the @Europarl_EN, but not with great success, bc their policies pose a structural problem for a pan-European movement. Often their debates descended into insult-laden quarrels.

Steve Bannon was a political genius who knew how to @Breitbart the public. What is "#Breitbarting?" Creating a culture to win influence. The Hollywood approach (aka Milo). Bannon's "falling out" with Trump made zero sense. It was staged. Why? Simple. He needed to launch #Qanon.
