I've tweeted the deployment to the border being explained using a conspiracy is a dangerous precedent.

However, as these stories about authorizations circulate, I've seen a lot of bad comments around, I feel it is important to remind everyone: these are American troops /1
American troops that operate with the most restrictive rules of engagement of almost any military in the world, and under a strict code of conduct. Failure to observe both will end a career. /2
They have commanders who understand exactly how challenging the political landscape here is, and how necessary it is to operate in narrow lanes on this deployment. /3
Please don't spread conspiracies that assume our military is a bunch of right-wing zealots who will lose control and end up shooting at migrants. I've seen a lot of comments assuming this is the inevitable outcome, and it's based on nothing, and really unhelpful. /4
If something happens -- which frankly, is super unlikely -- highly trained forces with a clear command structure are a better guarantee of less mistakes than other options.

This is doubly true when militias were going to self-mobilize to go to war against the "caravan" /5
Yes -- the border/migrant issue is absolutely being politicized in the grossest way for hollow political gains.

But in that environment, I'll take our guys anyday. They know migrants civilians, and the rules for engaging/dealing w/ civilians are very clear. /6
The addition of this force can create certainty amidst all the churn. In a garbage environment, it's a sucky deployment for them, but potentially a way to calm things down by removing that element of doubt and uncertainty. /7
There are many questions to be asked -- but not of the men and women who choose to serve.

So please drop the tweets assuming the worst of their behavior and training. This is garbage. They deserve better. /8
