1. Steve Bannon got the old band back together (including Corey Lewandowski and Seb Gorka) to make a mind-numbingly boring, 75 minute "film" to hype up the base in the run up to Tuesday's election. It's getting circulated by all of "the best people."
2. I just heard about this film in an e-mail I received from the 80-something year old former head of my county's GOP. She's now a big time QAnon fan, vigilant monitor of the deep state, Holocaust denier, homophobe, chemtrail expert, and major Trump fan.
3. This Screenshot shows how she framed the film for her audience. Subtle.
4. The film's message is what you would expect from the title: Trump and his supporters are at war...not so much with a foreign nation, but rather with their fellow citizens who are Democrats or who are "PC."
5. I don't know what to make of the YouTube view count (which was only in the 200s when I clicked on it). The far right folks hyping it on Twitter claim 7 million ppl have watched it. The film was just posted on YouTube today, so maybe my e-mail pal is in the MAGA vanguard.
6. The film is horrible, like all of Bannon's productions. I would recommend, however, checking out Gorka's star turn around the 1 hour and 11 minute mark. If there's an Oscar for "most bombastic and ludicrous metaphor proffered with a straight face," he's a shoe in.
7. As someone who follows the political news fairly closely, I'm intrigued that Bannon's "film" seems to have flown under the MSM radar, esp. given how avidly the far right seems to be hyping it. This is the first I've heard of it. It's not like Bannon to shun the spotlight.
8. There's not much that's newsworthy in it, to be sure, and Bannon should be ignored as much as possible. His "ideas" are as lucid as an improvising Steve Doocy attempting to summarize the *Nietzsche for Dummies* book he read while drunk last night.
9. Bannon's "film" does, however, offer a revealing (tho unsurprising) window into the worldview that animates Trump's most hardcore supporters. They are "at war" alongside Trump and against their fellow citizens. It's like a Ben Garrison comic brought to life...for a whole hour.
10. The @gop is playing with fire by associating themselves with messages like this, and they've got to know that. These are the sorts of angry, divisive narratives articulated on social media by the multiple ppl who've perpetrated acts of targeted, political violence recently.
11. The best historical comparison I can think of for Bannon's "film" is "Choice," a 30-minute ad produced for the Goldwater campaign as a hail mary in October of 1964, but which Goldwater decided was far too incendiary to actually show.
12. Goldwater, the guy famous for saying "extremism in the name of liberty is no vice" decided that "Choice" was too extreme to endorse. I never thought I'd be wishing for the days when @gop leaders had Goldwater's sense of self-restraint and decency.
Correction: the exact Goldwater quote was "extremism in defense of liberty is no vice."
13. A wee bit of googling turned up some interesting information on Bannon's partners in this production. His co-writer, Dan Fleuette, worked at Breitbart, is a longtime recipient of Mercer money, & helped bring the horrible Milo to the world's attention. nymag.com/intelligencer/…
14. The executive producer, Darren Blanton, has the virtue of having been associated with Martin Shkreli. He also claims to own $20 million in frozen horse semen...so he's got THAT going for him. cnbc.com/2017/07/06/mar…
15. The credits end with special thanks offered to a handful of people, one of whom is Sam Nunberg, famous for this excellent day of fame. washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/w…
16. And so ends today's episode of "the best people."
