I'm going to wrap up by tweeting a little about the work of @dfatirl. The Dept of External Affairs was one of the first Departments established in 1919. We're currently tweeting diplomatic highlights from the past 100 years & you can follow on Twitter with the hashtag #dfat100
The home of @dfatirl is Iveagh House which sits on St. Stephen's Green. It was built in 1736 & donated to the State in 1939 by the Guinness family - ever since it has been the home of Irish diplomacy. There's a short history of the house here: dfa.ie/about-us/iveag…
We currently have just over 80 missions around the world with the most recent addition @IrlinVancouver just opened led by my friend & colleague, Frank Flood (on the left below) which means that we finally have @dfatirl colleagues to talk with in Western North America!
It's an exciting time to be an Irish diplomat with plans to double the scope & impact of Ireland’s global footprint by 2025 under #GlobalIreland. I tweeted about @IrelandinLA a lot this week & there are six other new missions planned in 2019 in Africa, Asia & Europe.
The plan under #GlobalIreland is to open 26 new Embassies and Consulates by 2025, to appoint cultural attaches to major creative centres & to allocate 0.7% of GNI to overseas development assistance by 2030 as the world seeks to implement the #SDG agenda
The @DFATIRL & @Irish_Aid accounts are great at generating videos & other informational content & I would strongly recommend a follow if you want to continue learning more about the work of our Department. Their animation game has also greatly improved also in recent years!
It is also an exciting time because Ireland is running for a non-permanent seat at #UNSC for 2021-2022. We typically seek election at roughly 20 year intervals & were last on the Council in 2001-2002. The video below is an excellent intro to the campaign:
The themes of our campaign are Empathy, Partnership and Independence. The campaign brochure can be found at: merrionstreet.ie/MerrionStreet/…. We are competing with Canada&Norway for two seats & we're running on our strong commitment to the UN & proud history of service @irishmissionun
So much to be proud about Ireland at the UN: disarmament, our work at CSW led by Amb Byrne Nason, non-proliferation, ODA, SDGs, sharing our experience of building peace & reconciliation, and 60 years of continuous service on UN peacekeeping missions:
If you want to follow up with Ireland at the UN & how the campaign is progressing I would strongly recommend following Ireland's Permanent Mission to the UN on twitter @IrishMissionUN
