headed into the first albemarle county school board meeting since three of my comrades were convicted last week for their arrests at the august 30th meeting. feeling a little fucking sour about this whole thing.
where’s jason? 🤔
time for another high quality powerpoint presentation
i assume jason buyaki is absent because he’s at home googling “were dinosaurs real????”

sorry, i entered a fugue state the moment this powerpoint started
not listening to this powerpoint about public private partnerships, just enjoying the co-working space of this county office building auditorium as i scroll through gab on my phone.
“we are facing some challenges: the economy is strong.”
weird moment to tune back into this presentation. 🤷‍♀️
this is a pretty misleading graph - they’re exceeding the 75th percentile of an amalgamation of 26 other school districts.
school board chair kate acuff says throughout her entire time on the board they’ve had a very hard time hiring & keeping bus drivers. i’d venture to guess it isn’t a well-paid position. possible that these are related facts?
diantha mckeel suggests a common wage for bus drivers across all local transit bodies (schools, CAT, JAUNT, etc) to eliminate “internal competition”
kate acuff recounts a story from a special education teacher whose aide quit, saying “i’m 36 years old, i can’t work for $18,000/yr.”
“she can go work at wegmans for more than that.”
the average age of teachers locally is in the 50s. education schools are graduating fewer teachers than are retiring.
steve koleszar says that “WE think we have high cost of living,” but says we really don’t compared to areas like loudoun.
rick randolph says if the school system is going to use an in house pharmacy with their health plan, that they should not include any opiate drugs.
BOS member ann mallek points out that an $8,000 deductible may as well be an $80,000 one for many people
presenter: “i think this is a terrific slide.”
board member: “you should make it bigger then.”
i left home at 2:30 this afternoon a younger, more naive version of my current self. i thought i’d have time to go home between this school board meeting & city councgFQu
“even though the media plays up school shootings, schools are by far the safest place for students.” “it isn’t a significant risk for our students,” says steve koleszar
“thousands of kids die being driven to school by their parents.”
statistically speaking, yes, there are many causes of death more common than being shot at school. but there are far more school shootings than there should be (there should be zero)
albemarle county school board chair kate acuff’s birthday is tomorrow. i wish the princess of meeting civility a terrible fucking birthday.
and now, two hours late, this meeting is adjourned. just in time to drive over to city hall for tonight’s charlottesville city council meeting.
