Trafficked Europeans may have to pay to stay in UK post-Brexit - I tend to agree. Fee should be £10M for a UK passport and not charged to victims but those who trafficked and exploited. A police / intel unit should be financed and rewarded on this basis - theguardian.com/world/2018/nov…
... automatic provision of British citizenship and protection of the state for victims. By all those that exploited, I mean everyone - banks, lawyers, you name it ... there should be no hiding and when it comes to holding people as slaves, then no respect for national boundaries.
... as for "hostile" environment, I absolutely agree in hostility against those involved in trafficking and exploiting others. When it comes to victims, a vastly different and more supportive approach is needed.

Me : University or commercial?

Me : In academia, people tend to do the research before they submit the proposal to do the research in order to fit in with some sort of scheduled research delivery process / gantt chart ...
... i.e. they spend the time "researching" actually doing research on something else which once completed is submitted as the next research proposal so they guarantee milestones of when it'll be delivered (as it is already done). It's all about hitting KPIs etc.
X : What about commercial research?
Me : Well, a lot isn't actual research in the sense of creating a new field. It's more applied research. So there tends to be less uncertainty. Other areas, well you just have to embrace the chaos. Of course, people still want Gantt charts.

Me : Hmmm, a bucketload of tech acquisitions around Kubernetes. Expect big juicy deals.
X : It's the future?
Me : No. Mostly cash rich past giants with no future being clueless.
X : No market for Kubernetes?
Me : Some very profitable niches. Savvy tech buyer will wait until hype dries up before swooping in for tasty acquisitions around 2021-2022. This year will mainly be the clueless with big chequebooks. Hoping some friends will make it big this year.
X : The market doesn't operate to make your friends rich.
Me : Are you sure? It has been doing a good job of it - Cloud, Big Data, Containers ... it's always the same.
X : So, where is the future?
Me : I thought you were interested in acquisitions? They are not the same.

Jaguar Land Rover recently agreed 2 build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, same company who trashed our steel industry & emptied workers pension funds.

British Army's new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in SPAIN using SWEDISH steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales.

1/ Very small thread on why #Brexit is actualy leading to the end of the UK or atleast the UK of the post war period as we understand it & its much, much more than *just* Irish & the Scots. Its as much about the English and its polity......
2/ Firstly tho Irish unification & Scottish independence - the 1st is likely to be accelerated once the inevitable demographic reality tips in (around 2030). Scottish Indy less predictable but in any case #Brexit vote confirmed a break - one that's even riven the Scottish Tories.
3/ What many dont get is that #Brexit will findamentally change "restUK" too. After UKs decline in 70s, EU membership enabled UK to be a big hitter - an atlanticist well armed, UN Sec Council member "big beast" inside a "global player" european trade bloc. This will change....

1/ Small thread on Fish - hot topic of the day & cause of so many angy replies on my Timeline.
The big question: How can it be that an industry that has less full time employees than a village - circa 8 500 people - be so controversial?
How can this be driving our #Brexit future?
2/ first some context - not only does fishing (traditionally understood) employ barely a village - but this is not new.

UKs fishermen great decline happened post WWII but pre EEC.

In economic terms fishing is barely 0.1% of UK GDP!

3/ Next the UK imports much of the fish it eats & exports much of the fish it catches - there are complex reasons for this but a main one is taste.

Thats how trade works.

UK doesnt import fish "because of EU", it imports fish because it prefers to do so rather than eat its own.

I'm currently at this #Brexit conference in Copenhagen, where the British ambassador and several #DExEU officials will be on panels with representatives of Danish trade and security. It'll be very interesting to see what's said, especially in light of May's recent Munich speech.
And now that I'm not desperately trying to keep up with livetweeting it, I shall turn my mess of self-retweets into a proper thread. #Brexit #BrexitDK
acknowledges #Brexit will have challenges; emphasises no naïveté regarding "land of milk and honey". Refreshing sense of pragmatism; we'll see how #DExEU and DK reps present it.
