Soooo, I finally saw BEAUTIFUL BOY. 
It’s crushing. Repeatedly. In every way. It does not let you catch your breath, and when you do, it’s only because you’re going to need all of the oxygen you’ve got soon enough.
I’ve not been more aggressively grateful for my sobriety in quite some time. It was a tough movie to watch at times. Because the story it told was so damn real.
I know some people who have dealt with addiction and just flat-out said they did not need this movie. I totally get that. ... It’s also a movie about a certain type of addiction: white, upper/upper-middle-class addiction. There are no jails, and rehabs are just taken care of.
That said, this movie tells the story it tells tremendously well. Chalamet and Carell are impossibly perfect. Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan also capture their roles incredibly. The script is very real. The way the film is shot at points was distracting to me at first, but I get it.
I published a story I’m proud of today, I went to the gym, I got to see this movie. This would not have been my day if I were not sober. ... So, it was a gut punch of a movie — but I think it’s really just a sign of how well they did at showing a story that could be mine.

Honestly, more than a dozen years since his death, it also really made me miss my dad. *exhales* Night, all. 💜
