This thread has some observations from the 10th birthday of the Melbourne Agile and Scrum User Group meetup, that was held last Sat at @commoncode (hi @DarylAntony). meetup.com/scrum-12/event…
Earlier in the year, I noticed that the group was almost 10, so I said to @brown_note & @kearnsey that we should do something special. With a refreshing lack of red tape, @DarylAntony let us use his offices as the venue…and we were cooking.
Craig came up with the idea for the schedule, inviting people who had led a meetup at one point in its history, to do a 10 min talk. Roughly with the theme, "What I talked about in 20xx, and he's what I know about it now." The brief was interpreted widely!
The booking fee (via @Humanitix_Tweet) and other proceeds of the day are going to @ausrotaryhealth, in memory of our friend, Anton Rossouw, who we lost during the year. 😢 You too can donate here: australianrotaryhealth.org.au
First up, @kearnsey gave a bit of early history and how his viewpoint about the group, the community both locally and globally, has evolved. @StokesXandra mused on the topic she has cared about via what she's blogged about.
@brown_note had a wide range of thoughts, ignoring his own brief wildly by taking up at least 2x his timeslot! Then, @planetsuzie delivered a thoughtful, and on time, talk.
Daryl stood in for @neil_killick, who unfortunately couldn't make it. It was interesting to get his take on how developers and start-up entrepreneurs approach agility. Then, after all the navel gazing, @agileeddie turned the fun up to 11, with an Agile Pop Quiz!
A most excellent lunch break was coordinated by @LisaCJacob, aided by sunshine ☀️ and Common Code's Bodriggy beer. Here's a great group photo taken by Terry Corbett.
More insights from 2014 and 2015 came from the always insightful @peter8lam & @venky_nk, Venky reflecting on the inclusive nature of the community. @lanibeer recapped her 2016 agility journey. Really good!
A highlight for many was @rumadak and her Learning Manifesto, that she explained during her slot about 2017. Then it was my turn to wrap up with some thoughts about where we are in 2018…
I was mainly thinking about how we avoid being a group/community consisting of the same people talking the same stuff, to the same people. Some of the thinking online and in-person, in our little scene has echoed this, lately.
We want swear an oath of non-allegiance on one hand, while joining in with the framework wars and schisms. I don't claim to have the answers, so I hope we can be mindful of these contradictions.
.@kb2bkb ran a fun futurespective style activity, where we speculated on the future of agility, then we ran into a 1-to-1 fishbowl, suggested by @kearnsey. Here's @venky_nk & @MarkAtScale having a discussion about Large Scale Scrum and Scaled Agile Framework!
The call of the BBQ was then heard, to wrap up a day that played out almost exactly the way I had imagined. Thanks to everyone for making it a really nice event! See you at the next meetup. meetup.com/scrum-12/event…
