This morning 100s of young people came together to ask us as elected officials to act urgently to draft a Green New Deal that gets us to 100% renewable energy ASAP.

They asked me to join them, and I did. We can embrace the energy of activism to move our party’s goals forward.
I have spoken with @NancyPelosi about how our commitments to climate change should take shape in the 116th Congress.

Her office has responded quickly, and she has recommended the reinstatement of the Select Committee on Climate Change.
Reinstating the Select Committee is a great decision that I fully support.

These dynamic leaders want to ensure is that the committee:
- Has a mandate to draft a Green New Deal for 100% renewable energy
- No appointed members that accept funding from the fossil fuel industry

A few weeks ago, I joined youth activists in a specific demand for a Green New Deal Committee.

It had 3 simple elements:
1. No fossil fuel money on climate cmte
2. Offer solutions for impacted communities
3. Draft sample #GreenNewDeal

All 3 were rejected as “too controversial.”
In DC + even in our own party, it‘s apparently too controversial to ask that we keep oil+gas co’s away from enviro policy.

It’s too controversial to talk about the socioeconomics of Flint, WV, PR & the Bronx.

It’s too controversial to plan for disasters that are already here.
While I applaud the establishment of the Select Committee, without subpoena power or the reasonable requests stated, it will be in an even weaker position than the select climate committee of 10 years ago.

There is still time to strengthen it. For all our sake,I hope that we do.

Before everyone jumps one me - yes, culture isn’t DNA.

But to be Puerto Rican is to be the descendant of:
African Moors + slaves,
Taino Indians,
Spanish colonizers,
Jewish refugees,
and likely others.

We are all of these things and something else all at once - we are Boricua.
Just because one concrete identity may not be how we think of ourselves today, nor how we were raised, it doesn’t mean we cannot or should not honor the ancestors + stories that got us here.

I was raised Catholic, & that identity is an amalgam too - especially in Latin America.
If anything, the stories of our ancestry give us windows of opportunity to lean into others, to seek them out, and see ourselves, our histories, and our futures, tightly knit with other communities in a way we perhaps never before thought possible.

Unlike robber barons, I have no problem paying taxes & contributing to society. I’m a 1st gen kid that @ 29 w no kids will make more than my parents did.

I SHOULD pay more if it means giving the waitress-me a break. I’m GLAD my taxed income can mean better Bronx public schools.
Taxes should respect a person’s station in life, including working people + parents. It’s ludicrous that we tax Warren Buffet’s secretary more than we tax him - and he has said as much.

Sensible + conscientious people of all incomes want a fair society. amp.cnn.com/money/2013/03/…
Now what I DON’T want is for our public funds to be funding freebie helipads for Amazon + robber baron billionaires, all while NYCHA and public schools go underfunded & mom+pops get nowhere near that kind of a break.

Hi guys! @AtteHarjanne and me just published a paper "Abandoning the concept of #renewable #energy" at Energy Policy. In it, we argue that the concept of #renewableenergy (RE) is outdated. 1/

What we argue here is that using what is basically a 1970s-era definition of renewable energy, and conflating "renewable" with "sustainable" or even "clean," is becoming more a hindrance than a help in meeting the main challenge of the early 2000s - #climatechange . 2/
We argue that the concept of RE was largely set in stone well before the magnitude of #climate challenge, and actual problems with some sources that are technically renewable, was understood. This has resulted to, e.g., using the "renewable" label to cover all bioenergy. 3/

I am seeing a lot of either/or and flat out misinformation about two proposals to address climate change: Carbon Fee and Dividend and a Green New Deal. Here's a thread with my thoughts.
First, let me make it clear that I support both. I started the Citizens Climate Lobby chapter in my city, which is still going strong though I have moved on to chairing the Sierra Club's Ready for 100 campaign in my city.
I also went to Washington, DC, on December 9-10 to get arrested in front of Steny Hoyer's office and spent six hours handcuffed at a police warehouse to support a Green New Deal.

1. It requires great self-discipline to regularly subject oneself to the insane ramblings of “The Resistance” these days, but we ignore what they say at our collective peril.
2. I – probably like many of you – spend most of my time in the “Conservative Twittersphere” interacting with like-minded ideological souls. Why subject oneself to the mindless clichés of the Left (except to practice one’s debating skills – easily done!)?

Finding feasible and cost-effective paths to a carbon-free grid is as important as ever! For guidance, @max_energy @samthernstrom & I reviewed 40 academic studies charting course to a decarbonized power system & synthesized findings in a paper just published in the journal Joule.

The Socialist Party was winning elections in early 1900s and proved a strong opponent to the Dems & GOP, especially when combined with unions and strikes. I believe an independent party is needed yet again.
The Socialist Party was on track to become a major party in US politics until many anti-war socialist and union leaders were jailed during the World Wars (in particular, horrible laws like Sedition Act of 1918).
More or less, the final nail in the coffin was FDR's New Deal, which was largely based on demands from the Socialist Party platform. It was a compromise to "save capitalism", in FDR's words -- keep capitalism by creating a social safety net to reduce tensions.
