My sister is a teacher in Chico and many of her students, friends and colleagues have lost everything in the #campfireparadise. Her and my nephew are safe (minus some smoke inhalation) and are organizing relief efforts. She has shared some input on what is needed:
The biggest need now is monetary. Town is inundated with physical donations at this point that take up space and volunteer resources.

She suggests donating to:
- Her school drive
- North Valley Community Foundation,
- North Valley Animal Disaster Group

This is a good fund run by community leaders that are experienced in organizing and fundraising.

Most important is to stay motivated to help because the sheer volume of nearly an entire town being displaced and not enough places for them to go is going to take a very long time and support down the stretch is key.

This is a story from when I was young, and first shared 3 yrs ago: My dad is a garbage man and has worked for a private, not city run, company for over 20 years. This company is owned by an Italian American family. Employed at this company are a large number of Mexican Americans
One particularly grueling role in the industry is the MRF line, or Materials Recovery Facility to receive, separate and prepare recyclables from all incoming trash. The majority of the employees at our MRF are Mexican women. Mothers, sisters, daughters.
On one horrendous day, one of these women found the worst case scenario: the cold and lifeless body of a newborn infant. After some investigation, the mother was identified. She wasn't a criminal or a monster, she was a child herself, deathly afraid and felt without options.

Like damn, how many years could I have had back I'd known earlier. I've always been intense. I like to perform, have a mouth on me, and enjoy making people laugh but have crippling anxiety and have experienced waves of depression before I even knew that's what they were.

One of the reasons why the 9W stuff is interesting to me is partly due to how it all turned out, what they achieved and the hardships they faced and also partly because I could see Kitacon going the same route and facing the same challenges.
Obviously I'm keen to avoid the pitfalls others have made in order to maintain a strong event and team but I can't help be worried about the geek/nerd communities being swallowed up by non caring events worried only about their bottom line.

1/ I'm stunned, but not surprised by AT&T's decision to extended their #Friends licensing deal with Netflix through 2019. A perfect example of, despite saying they were committed to winning in SVOD, Big Media wants to have their cake, eat it to - and then hope they get a 3rd cake
2/ #Friends is one of Netflix's most valuable titles. It's one of the most celebrated sitcoms, one of Netflix's most popular series, and has a whopping 236 episodes of tonnage - and a fervent fanbase
3/ AT&T could (and should) have simply moved #Friends to HBO, their leading SVOD asset. Imagine the impact on customer acquisition - all of a sudden the press coverage inundates all Friends fans to get HBO, if they haven't already!

Many people have taken issue with @Nike's use of the phrase "sacrificing everything" with Colin Kaepernick's face, when others have made greater (or different) sacrifices for what they believe. I can understand that initial gut reaction.

But here's the thing:
"Sacrificing everything" is a fairly common figure of speech and rarely means literally sacrificing everything. It's almost always used figuratively in some kind of context, signifying giving up something major in exchange for something more important.
Nike is an athletic brand. Becoming an NFL QB takes an enormous amount of dedication and effort. So in the context of an athletic brand's marketing campaign highlighting an athlete who lost **everything he'd worked his lifetime toward as an athlete,** the phrase makes sense.

Many Americans are joking about today's events while my friends and colleagues abroad are stunned and horrified.

I have come close to tears while writing about today's events. One Brit friend said, "I hope this isn't the death of your democracy."

I hope not, either.
What concerns me is that Americans are already inured to Trump's outrageous behavior and thus are shrugging this off. Many on the left are making inane comments like "we knew, so what?"

This isn't just about America. This is about the free world versus dictatorship.
The FACT that the POTUS spoke out AGAINST our own government in defense of a foreign dictator who attacked our country as clearly as the 9/11 attacks should give every American a frisson of fear.

Two superpowers aligned today against the West.

Teacher is inexperienced. I agree kids today are not being disciplined at home. But tchr is in control of class. My students in inner city had to deal w/ gangs, wild dogs, drugs, no supervision at home. But in my classroom they were safe & followed rules (con't)
80% of class needed special ed. 36 students in a class.Most were 2 years behind grade level. It was up to me to make it work. My priority was their self-esteem, & teaching reponsibility. Together we set up rules & consequences that they agreed to. They were invested
In their success . Not ideal but can be done without parent involvement. Many homes only 1 parent w/ 2 jobs. I gave stud consistent praise, routines & chances to show pride in their efforts. There were many behavior problems that were challenging. The key is your expectations
