Donald Trump’s ascendancy has revealed quite a lot about two key American institutions: the GOP and white evangelicalism. Both will need to do much soul searching if they want to remain relevant in a post-Trump world.
These two charts speak volumes I think. The percentage of the population that is comprised of white evangelicals declined from 17% to 15.3% just between 2016 and 2018. Yet because they turn out at such high rates, they are keeping the Trumpian GOP afloat.
There is not much more turnout to be squeezed out of the white evangelical community, AND that community is shrinking in both raw numbers and as a proportion of the population. The GOP will soon have to look elsewhere for voters.
The problem is that because the white evangelical community has become so much more extreme in their politics, the messages that work with them positively drive away those who don't share their identity.
There are signs that many young evangelicals are beginning to dissent from the politics of their elders. This cohort could be the nucleus of an American evangelicalism that is far more progressive and inclusive in a variety of ways. newyorker.com/news/on-religi…
If I was a betting man, I'd say there's a greater chance that American evangelicalism will reawaken its 19th century Abolitionist roots than the GOP will return to its Lincolnian roots. Despite their best efforts, the Never Trumpers seem to have little impact on the GOP base.
