still trying to decide if i'm gonna duck out of this meeting halfway through to catch public comment at the albemarle county board of supervisors meeting...
the jail reentry data summary powerpoint probably can’t compare to the absolutely wild presentation i saw earlier today, but the city is live-streaming it here

approximately a person per day re-enters our community after serving 30+ days in the albemarle charlottesville regional jail
unsurprisingly, most folks reentering the community were NOT serving time for a violent crime, half them need substance abuse treatment, and a third of them (HALF OF ALL WOMEN!) need mental health treatment.
huh, maybe jail isn’t the answer.
councilor wes bellamy asks neal goodloe if he has any of this data broken down by race... he does not.
a lot of talk from the jail superintendent about the programs available... followed by a powerful rebuttal in the form of a public comment from a woman who served time in that jail for a felony. “the conditions are absolutely disgusting,” she says.
she says the programs available aren’t truly offering education & skills the women need. “we were going to the classes just to go.”
“they need clothes when they get out, a lot of us get out and we’ve lost everything.”
“i don’t think the commonwealth’s attorney’s office is really worried about people reentering the world.”
jail superintendent kumer responds by saying “she’s absolutely right,” and says they’ve added many more programs for women in recent years.
the ACRJ population is only about 15% women, most of whom are serving very short sentences. he says it’s difficult to have programming for that population.
mayor nikuyah walker says “those are the kinds of things we as a community need to find a way to undo” about the $8/day CHARGE billed to inmates on work release.
nancy at the mic talking about the importance of trauma informed care & the relationship between housing instability & people ending up in the criminal justice system.
i popped out to see public comment at the county BOV meeting - the presentation of the petition to remove the county courthouse’s confederate monument.
the city’s livestream of the ACRJ meeting seems to have cut out. it’s being streamed here - facebook.com/cvilletv10/vid…
and i’m back! thanks @lovejenwest for covering it while i was gone! (her updates are replies to the previous post in this thread)
mike signer raises the idea of holding every other council meeting in a location other than council chambers. (sounds like a logistical nightmare!)
they used to have a work session the 1st thursday of every month, but stopped (when?)
a woman approached the mic to ask them to think about the children affected by having an incarcerated parent - what resources are going to them?
ah, i rushed back for nearly nothing - they’re going into closed session now. well, back to the county board of supervisors meeting, then.
