My story of #academicmisconduct in an authentic task designed to help students demonstrate a knowledge of the content & prepare them for graduate job applications #ascilite2018 #academicintegrity
The task was a video interview - 2 questions students received about course content, applying theory in context. Students applied randomly to one of 10 groups - all diff questions. Students did not know what questions they would get #ASCILITE2018
60% marks for presentation skills (verbal and non-verbal).
15% for their camera and background
15% on content
Plenty of support, exemplars, rubric/assessment criteria given
Video testimonials from past students about the importance of the task to get a grad job

I change the questions every single semester.
Came back from maternity leave and detected 55 students who cheated. 16% of the cohort.
Students worked in groups of 4-8 to prepare memorised answers to questions from previous sessions. #ASCILITE2018
I could see them looking at notes posted around the webcam.
I manually transcribed all student interviews so that we could run text analysis and detect all cases. A 250hr job on top of my normal workload to detect & write up these cases

When we asked students why they cheated - plenty of reasons. Didn’t know it was cheating on a verbal task
Cheating was ok on small tasks.
Private tutor said it was ok.
They’d take the risk that if detected, it wouldn’t get reported and they’d get 0. #ASCILITE2018
So authentic task, task related to employability, task that only took 6 minutes to record, task that was well supported in terms of T&L

Brought down by student understanding and attitudes/rationalisation towards #academicintegrity
#ascilite2018
But it is better now - interventions on increasing awareness and challenging misconceptions has resulted in 0 cases in 2018 (after 55 cases in S2, 2017). #ASCILITE2018
