Quick thread on the manufactured controversy (i.e. smear campaign) regarding @marclamonthill’s UN speech. Let me start by addressing the competing visions of the one-state solution (1/8)
Palestinians made a massive compromise in the 80s, accepting a 2-state solution where they would get less than 1/4th of their historic homeland. Israel rejected that compromise & kept building illegal settlements on top of the occupied Palestinian territories. (2/8)
As a result of Israel’s rejection of the incredibly generous Palestinian compromise, we’re confronted with the current one-state reality. The only question is, what should this one state look like? Should everyone’s basic rights be respected in it? (3/8)
Netanyahu supports a 1-state solution (he categorically rejects a viable Palestinian state timesofisrael.com/netanyahu-no-p…), but he is actively destroying Palestinian society & building a 1-state reality where Palestinians are a subservient population to be kept down & dominated. (4/8)
By contrast, Marc supports a one-state vision where everyone has equal rights. Whatever you think of this vision, it isn’t calling for “destruction”, but merely a transformation from a discriminatory state that privileges some over others into an equal state for all. (5/8)
If you haven’t vigorously opposed Israel’s oppressive occupation of the Palestinian territories (destroying 2-state solution), but find yourself troubled by Marc’s support for a single democratic state, you should check your moral compass, because it’s not working well. (6/8)
& all violence against civilians is despicable & illegitimate. But if you have a problem with the right of occupied people to resist the theft of their lands & the stripping of their rights (NOT thru terrorism), it’s not Marc you have a problem with, it’s international law. (7/8)
& if u haven’t protested Israel’s atrocities killing thousands of Palestinian civilians (condemned by every major human rights org, including Israeli ones), but are troubled by Marc’s acknowledgment of the right to resist, make an effort to rid yourself of moral hypocrisy. 8/END)
