Excellent analysis @RTDSchapiro Taxpayers have no control over Dominion. The $1.4 Billion boondoggle for #RVA has immediate 30% hike in real estate taxes to cover the cost.
Schapiro: Northam stumbles over the details - but at what cost? richmond.com/news/plus/scha… via @rtdnews
2. @DominionEnergy exists for the benefit of its investors. Its Billion $ projects approved by the state are paid for by consumers. They are a regulated monopoly. That's their business model. @NHDistrict is a shell, protecting DE and its leaders from debt.
3. @RTDSchapiro That shell serves for financial activities shielding @DomEnergyVA and NHD principals from any liability. It can dissolve at any time in bankruptcy and #RVA taxpayers are on the hook for $1.4 B plus $800Mil for school repairs, that is $2BILLION
4. Virginia doesn't provide a backstop for cities' debts. This means #RVA can easily become Petersburg shackled with debt. $2Billion is massive debt @NHDistrict can disappear. That IS NOT the free market operating. It's reckless government @RTDSchapiro
5. This $Billion project has been completely opaque and was agreed to behind closed doors because it is a terrible deal for #RVA tax payers, especially real estate taxes, already highest in the region. It calls for immediate 30% real estate hike.
6. My real estate taxes have increased 10% since @LevarStoney became mayor. The massive 30% jump proposed to cover the $1.4 Billion will drive middle class Richmonders like me out of the city. That increases income inequality. @RTDSchapiro
7. I am one who moved into the city to live and invest to help it rebuild 46 years ago. If the Coliseum is a problem, sell it, privatize it. THAT WOULD BE FREE MARKETS operating. Incurring massive govt debt is NOT. @RTDSchapiro
8. For comparison, there are TWO very good examples of free market development in the region. Off track betting on historical races coming into Southside is one. Not one $ cost to the city and all the many benefits. THAT's how its done. @LevarStoney
9. The 2nd example: new coliseum in Fredericksburg, $0 cost to the City of Fredericksburg. A professional team wants to expand & will build a coliseum. There's a MARKET NEED, a customer for the coliseum. This #RVA project DROVE AWAY its team. @RTDSchapiro
10. Those 2 local examples ARE FREE MARKETS operating. This $Billion Boondoggle IS NOT. #RVA cannot dissolve itself and go away as NHDistrct can do, and Cambridge Analytica has done. RVA cannot, and city taxpayers are stuck with massive debt. @RTDSchapiro
