I know this is a foreign concept to most folks, but we scientists on university faculties – especially conservation/ecology types – generally do NOT do things "for the money". 1/n #sciencemoney
When I am awarded a grant, that money goes to creating a position for me to hire a grad student or post-doc to manage the project. I could request something like 1 month salary for myself (I'm only paid for 11) but I almost never do. #sciencemoney 2/n
That's the most I *could* do, though, i.e., get paid a full 12 months of my salary. With few exceptions (e.g., 13-month salaries), there's no way for us public scientists to get rich off grants. #sciencemoney 3/n
Most of us, in fact, are only paid for 9 months. If we want to get paid for the full 12, it is incumbent on us to find grants to provide that $$. But it's still going to level off at an annual salary well below that predicted given our education & skill set. #sciencemoney 4/n
#sciencemoney Not only do we have no ability to get rich from grants, there is perhaps nothing so antithetical to our calling as scientists than to betray our integrity to shill for someone else. We're just not wired that way. If we were, we would not have pursued academia! 5/n
All of which is to say that @KHayhoe and thousands of other scientists out there rallying clarity and action on #ClimateChange are in no one's hip pocket. It might sound odd to you, but we really really just care about the Earth our grandchildren will inherit. 6/n
We are the ones with the training and insight to see the dangerous place we've entered. We are the ones who could make BIG $ selling out to climate deniers. But we don't, and we can't because no amount of $ is worth sacrificing our integrity and our future. 7/7
