A few notes on the problems with @tumblr's new ban on adult content, which shows just how many ways platforms and tech companies can get in between users and their freedom of expression: eff.org/deeplinks/2018…
The policy is confusing and broad, leaving users in the lurch about what they can and can’t do on Tumblr. support.tumblr.com/post/180758979…
Enforcement of the policy will be reliant on automated tools, the use of which is—and always has been—rife with problems. (For some examples, check out the hashtag #TooSexyforTumblr twitter.com/search?q=%23to…)
And lastly, the people punished by policies like this aren’t pornbots or sex traffickers, but already-marginalized groups who have built sex- and body-positive communities on Tumblr. eff.org/deeplinks/2018…

0. so i archived and downloaded my tumblrs last night, and i'm having . . . some feelings about it. strap in, friendos, this is secretly two threads stacked on top of each other in a giant trenchcoat here we go
1. i am not going to pretend that tumblr was perfect. *l-rd* no, that site had its problems, ranging from the tedious "we can't get rid of Nazis" moderation to the porn bots to the vicious callout culture with zero room for error and zero chance to apologize and grow
2. but it wasn't exclusively a shitshow, and i do feel a deep sense of grief for its impending destruction. for all its faults, tumblr was a hugely important social space for me, in no small part because of the adult content that they're now trying to wipe from the site

Now that Tumblr is shutting down all "adult content", will people finally start paying attention to #SESTA/#FOSTA (and hold the people who created it accountable)?

How many more attacks on queer people and sex workers do we need before people acknowledge that it's a problem?

Where are all the people who were calling themselves allies and promising that, after the election, they'd work to pressure anti-SW Democrats into supporting sex workers? 🤔
I endured SO much outright abuse - yes, abuse - from (white) liberals and "allies" all year for talking about SESTA/FOSTA.

So yeah, I'm sure as fuck going to call their bluff on the "we'll do the work after the election" promise.

Google employees have circulated a letter that condemns the Dragonfly project & criticises the secrecy around it. "We urgently need more transparency, a seat at the table, & a commitment to clear and open processes: Google employees need to know what we’re building," they write.
The employees are demanding that Google leadership begin an ethics review that includes rank & file employee reps, an ombudsperson to oversee the process, more transparency across the company, & “ethical test cases” assessing the China censorship plans.
