it's weird that in 2035 electronics youtubers will talk about 3d printed stuff the way they talk about bakelite and brominated ABS now; a quirky, young manufacturing technique you have to be Aware Of if you're looking at old rare stuff
what will happen to 3d prints over time? people are selling c64 floppy adapters in chassis made of cleverly applied hot glue. i have this sneaking suspicion that we will learn about something like "polymer delamination syndrome" in 5-10 years
i'm not saying people should stop - the NES turned brown, that wasn't a reason not to make it. but i am curious to see if some weird shit is going to befall this incredibly young technology
i am to a point brain poisoned; i see everything in terms of "what neologisms will forumites have invented for this thing's failures in 15 years." i was around when the chinese cap plague was new and unknown, and nobody quite realized at the time what was going on.
looking back we now see "oh, they *all blew up*, fuck" but at the time it was just a thing that happened sometimes and it took a *little* time to realize that it was widespread and random
what strange things are occurring due to chemical reactions in bad batches of 3d printer filament that are being chalked up to random failures, but in 15 years forumites will be sighing "oh, you got one with PDS, there's not much you can do..."
