Report by @MobilePunch that @NGRSenate allegedly pays Dariye N85.5m allowances in prison is illegal and unacceptable. Nigeria has ratified the UN Convention against Corruption which requires institutions of government like @NGRSenate to ensure dissuasive sanctions for corruption.
The alleged payment of allowances has failed to take into account the gravity of Dariye’s conviction for embezzling N1.162bn. It also has failed to deter corruption.
@bukolasaraki @NGRSenate
Paying Dariye monthly allowances while in prison and for work not done violates Nigeria's international obligations. It’s also a fundamental breach of constitutional oath by @NGRSenate to ensure order and good government.
@MBuhari @ProfOsinbajo
It would be highly damaging to the legitimacy of the oversight functions of
@NGRSenate to check corruption if a convicted lawmaker is allowed to continue to receive his over N13m monthly allowances, salary and other benefits from prison.
It sends a message that our lawmakers are shielding themselves from accountability. Even if Dariye has appealed his conviction and sentence, @NGRSenate should have at least suspended payment of his allowances, etc pending the final determination of his appeal.
Corruption offences are universally punished with deprivation of certain rights [in this case, we strongly believe Dariye shouldn't be paid over N13m monthly allowances, salaries and other benefits while in prison].
