He’s also a profoundly decent, kind, & excellent human being.

Stu has been doing health policy in the Senate. He worked with my wife, so I got to know him personally as well as professionally. He’s got a kind of radiant affability, combined with a razor-sharp mind and unshakable principles.
He’s the kind of guy who would come over for dinner, read to your kids before bedtime (at their insistence), and then fix your ceiling fan—all while brainstorming brilliant strategies to expand access to rural health care & curb the opioid crisis. We wouldn’t want him to leave.

Here’s the reality: this shutdown could end with Trump cracking—or with McConnell simply overriding a Trump veto and re-passing the spending bill that previously sailed unanimously through the Senate and, in the next Congress, just passed the House.

The conventional wisdom is that voters have short memories and that damage from shutdowns fades fast. But that won’t apply if this lasts for months. Nobody forgot health care repeal. This shutdown will cause more & more real pain. And the public knows who’s inflicting it on them.

Elections should be over a 3 day holiday weekend. You should be registered when you get any state issued ID. The voting age should be 16. Number of polling places should be based on population & ease of access. Gerrymandering should be illegal & the electoral college should be 🚽
A lot of people are getting stuck at the idea of the voting age being lowered to 16. Why do we trust 16 year olds to operate heavy machinery but not to vote?
W/ all the work that teens have done recently to get conversations going on major issues (See the Parkland students & gun control & the work of Black youth in Chicago & the CPD.) I'm kind of shocked at how much condescension & outright shittiness there is towards teens voting.

1. The parts of corporate America that have any basic understanding of history and political philosophy are, I hope, having an internal debate right now about Trump.
2. One one hand & in the short term they're thinking, WE'RE IN THE MONEY!!!!
On the other hand & in the long term, "this guy is a threat to the existing global order, the US constitutional order, & basic social order, all of wch are necessary pre-conditions for us MAKING MONEY!!"
3. Anecdotal evidence in regard to this. Someone I know works for an accounting firm that helps really rich people pay as few taxes as possible. In 2016, almost all of their co-workers voted for Trump for $$$ reasons. Today, almost all say they'd never vote for Trump again.

I wish we would stop indulging in the imagined nostalgia of "The Golden Age of Islam".

If those luminaries were alive today, they'd be considered deviant by your standards.

In fact, Al-Ghazali played role in the decline by saying that 'falsafa' was incompatible with Islam.
He did this because he believed the philosophies and scientific discoveries that were propagated by his counterparts were not Islamic.

He shut them down in "The Incoherence of Philosophers" in an attempt to steer civilisation back to Islam. He succeeded.
The "golden age" had nothing to do with the religion. Their achievements were not meant to propagate tenets of Islam.

A lot of people equated their achievements as Islamic, like we still do today, thus why Al-Ghazali came in to separate one from the other.
