@Alyssa_Milano I agree, this incident MUST be investigated. Justice MUST be served.

But that’s only the start. We have to review EVERYTHING.

The separation policy. Its implementation. Whether it violates the Flores settlement. Whether it violates the stay. And more.

When the Trump administration began the family separation policy, they first denied it existed. Then Sessions officially announced the policy, ridiculously proclaiming that the Bible supported it.

Trump lied and blamed Democrats for creating the policy.

time.com/5314769/family…
There must be hearings about who began this, when, what instructions they gave to CBP, what legal authority they claimed supports it and what their implementation plan was.

Of course, it’s clear they had no plan. They were playing with children’s lives.

usatoday.com/story/news/nat…
Even if they had legal standing to separate the children, closing the borders and not letting people claim asylum is obviously illegal; it even says so on the US government’s own website

So there was basically no rationale to detain these immigrants

uscis.gov/humanitarian/r…
Worse, when they decided to do it anyway, they used unsanitary, inadequate facilities; poorly trained and inadequately vetted staff; lack of proper nutrition, and; lack of proper medical care

texasobserver.org/treated-worse-…
Not surprisingly, this led to abuse, sickness, disease and even death.

texastribune.org/2018/08/27/tod…
Of course, some of the victims sued. And won. A judge ordered the administration to stop separating children, and reunite the victims of this horrid policy.

nbcnews.com/news/us-news/j…
But the Trump administration was so incompetent and belligerent that it became impossible to reunite some of the separated children.

Just think about that. Children permanently orphaned by an immoral government policy and inability to even do it properly

nytimes.com/2018/07/05/us/…
And even though the government was supposed to have stopped separating children from their families, somehow the number of children kept in these internment was camps has ballooned from almost 2,600 to NEARLY 15,000

thehill.com/policy/healthc…
This is mind boggling. It also violates an agreement the government entered into in 1997 when it agreed not to keep children in custody for more than 20 days.

Some of these kids are there for months.

cnn.com/2018/07/10/pol…
When you forcibly take kids from their parents, put them in unsanitary facilities with insufficient, poorly trained and unscreened adults as supervision, inadequate nutrition and improper access to medical care, it should come as no surprise that kids get sick, abused or even die
But even THAT’S not all. They are forced to appear in immigration court, some are coerced or bamboozled to agree to deportation, and many not only don’t speak English, but even if they could they’re not old enough to understand what’s happening to them

nytimes.com/2018/10/08/us/…
Even when adults offer to care for the children, simultaneously providing a better living situation for them and saving taxpayers the expense of paying for their incarceration, they are met with impossible hurdles to overcome, so the kids stay in jail

cnn.com/2018/09/14/pol…
This atrocious confluence of decisions by the Trump administration seemingly made it inevitable that a tragedy such as this one would occur.

Jakelin Caal Maquin deserved better. She deserved a chance. But now she’ll never get one.

cnn.com/2018/12/14/us/…
This ALL needs to be investigated. Congress needs to haul ALL of them in for hearings. Kelly. Nielsen. Miller. Sessions. Sanders. Trump, if they can. Everyone associated with this.

They all need to be held accountable for their actions.

Jakelin Maquin deserves nothing less.
