Founders, you know the importance of hiring Product managers. How do you recognize bad product managers after hiring, especially, when they looked good during the interview process? Few signs to watch.
1. They have a massive ego about the role and power. They demand respect v/s earning respect from others.
2. They talk big and tell great stories about other company products. But, when it comes to your product, they can’t explain how they would make the product a market-winner.
3. They try to complicate things by refusing to copy the basic features/use-cases from best-of-the-breed products. They want to solve everything via first principles.
4. They are busy talking to everyone, but, always qualitatively, v/s quantitatively. Sometimes, they talk numbers, but, rarely the product core metrics related to acquisition, engagement, usage, retention, or growth.
5. The worst part is that everyone likes them for their enthusiasm. By the time you realize that they are bad product-managers, they would have spent several quarters. Product core metrics would have moved here an there, but, not to the level you care.
Not having a product manager is better than the bad product manager. Make sure you get them off the role as soon as you recognize that it is not working.
