Yuuuup, cuz Everybody Knows Kids Don't Buy Comics.

Got another story about that, actually.
So here's Kamandi, Last Boy on Earth. He's an also-ran Jack Kirby character no one really remembers too well.

But not so long ago, a comic artists named Paul Pope decided he'd like to resurrect him in a new series.
Since he obviously didn't own Kamandi, he had to ask for permission. So, he pitched the idea to an editor at DC.

"Who would something like this be for?" The editor asked when he was done.

Paul said something like, I dunno, 12 year old boys? That's who Kamandi was always for.
The reply: "We make comics for 45-year-olds.”

Yeah. Really.

All-ages comics? YA comics? Kid comics? Not here at DC.
This exchange went down in 2005. That was the same year Scholastic began reissuing Bone.
And the epilogue: Paul Pope released this, "Battling Boy," through First Second in 2013. It's been optioned for a film, since.

Life Finds A Way.
DC knew the market existed. Bone had just concluded its initial run, to wild success and critical acclaim, and achieved the unthinkable: A deal with a "real publisher." And DC just didn't give a shit. They didn't get it at all.
