Hmm, this seems like an interesting (and not so obvious question):

To what extent are the “great books” legitimately great, and stood the test to time do to quality?
Vs succeeded because of political leanings or other social connections in their day, and are still read because now it’s a way to show you are well read, or we just need a common referent to express an idea, or what not?
(Anybody have a clue? Or some evidence/anecdotes that point one way or the other? Seems fundamental for understanding how the arts work, no?)
