USA needs a GDPR. Europe is decades ahead of us and the next Congress needs to catch up. The FTC has clearly failed to protect America’s personal data. Our approach to privacy was a mistake. Time to admit it. Time to get serious.
When we discovered that US voter data was processed by Cambridge Analytica in the UK we realized we could complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office. There is no such equivalent in the US. What if Cambridge Analytica hadn’t exported our data to UK?
My personal highlight of 2018: Realizing the work of 2017 had paid off. The world’s first criminal prosecution of Cambridge Analytica is because a simple filing with the UK ICO. Turns out, my Independence Day. Essentially, why is a British company interfering with my elections?
What are they hiding? I’ve been at this for nearly two years. Deep into English law. They’ve deceived lawmakers. They’ve deceived courts. We can attest to it. It’s why I know the USA needs a GDPR. Data rights are the new civil rights. Data crimes are real crimes.
