@aClassicLiberal 1/ I read this post when it first came out. I love Reason. OTOH, they are foolish in their attempts at even-handedness. Their “both sides” parallel is inapt, misleading, and destructive to the interests of conservative politics. “Trump is authoritarian” is a canard.
@aClassicLiberal 2/ The Left is not authoritarian—it is totalitarian. In the U.S., the right is not authoritarian, it is Liberal in the 18th-Century sense of that term. No party will ever be close to perfect. Conservative thinking accepts this fundamental reality.
@aClassicLiberal 3/ The Reason/Libertarian Party faction prefer to entertain the pipe dream of libertarian purity, to the detriment of real libertarian progress. There is one party which combines meaningful real power with a focus on individual liberty. That is the GOP.
@aClassicLiberal 4/ As long as Libertarians maintain their pretense of even-handed, “a pox on both your houses” purity of principle, they will continue to (marginally) enable the eternally pernicious campaign of disinformation on the Left.
@aClassicLiberal 5/ A full embrace of the GOP is not at all necessary. Simply abandoning the disingenuousness that unintentionally favors the leftists would change the narrative. I’m convinced many who lean/vote Democrat would have their eyes opened to the dangers of leftism if Libertarians
@aClassicLiberal would only be more realistic about the degree to which American conservatives’ philosophy overlaps with libertarian philosophy, and how vast the chasm is between progressives and libertarians. That is all.
@aClassicLiberal PS/ The ideological purity of those like you who don’t vote for the candidate who is UNQUESTIONABLY the closer of the two to libertarian ideals does damage in the long trajectory of our two-party system. I like to employ the analogy of prices as signals. A vote is a signal —
@aClassicLiberal Not to vote is to abdicate the power one does hold in our republic (admittedly miniscule, but cumulatively significant). If a liberty-loving voter cannot grasp the vastly greater danger of a Dem president to a GOP president in 2018, I despair of their hold on reality.
