Ok here's the thing, EU citizens in the UK were promised to continue their lives "as before".

But settled status is a lesser status & we need to apply, qualify & pay for it.

If you don't care about us, think about this: can you still trust the Govt with your own rights?
P.S. These guys had no idea what they were talking about in 2016, did they?
I did not expect this to be shared so many times! While you're here and interested in this subject, why not follow and support @The3Million, @BritishInEurope and @eucitizenschamp who are working hard to hold both UK and EU stakeholders to account on #citizensrights? Thank you.

I wonder if the promise signatories, @BorisJohnson, @patel4witham, @GiselaStuart and @michaelgove, can stand up & explain why this cannot be delivered?

Morning! I had the privilege to pay and apply to stay in my own home part of the Settled Status trial.

Computer said Yes with the Android app, but then said No to prove residency (always earned below tax free threshold), so I had fun scanning proof for 2012-2018. Now wait & see!
The system is only quick and streamlined if you are 1. An employee earning above the tax free threshold for 5 years or 2. if you accessed benefits for 5 years. As a student working part-time I have not done either of these. Everyone who is not 1 or 2 needs to scan extra evidence
Overall, the ID check took me 12 mins and the time spent on the website continuing the app about 45 mins (including scanning, compressing - max 2mb allowed per file and max 10 files). Anyway, MUCH better than my failed 2.5kg PR application attempt.

Here's the communication strategy on #citizensrights of most politicians:

1. Promise "automatic grant" of all exiting rights
2. Win the referendum and realise 1. is undeliverable
3. Promise "lives as before"
4. Rebrand. "Lives broadly as before"

5. Hope no one reads legal texts and discover that rights are being lost in the process
6. They found out. Ok. PR time
7. Make sure all Government reps say on all media channels "#citizensrights are secured", including the PM. Avoid questions on specific concerns.

8. Refuse to meet interest groups, including own British citizens in EU.
9. Send ministers to EU Embassy events and deliver the line: "We are so grateful for the contribution of (insert EU nationality) to the UK. We want you to stay and we secured your rights". Leave before Q&As.

Just finished criticising the Remain campaign in my talk @LSELibrary.

Official Remain:
• ignored the human face of @The3Million
• focused on remote national arguments of how "the brighest and the best" contribute, rather than arguments on local impacts and community
• did not engage in dialogue w the economic Leave arguments of people not benefitting from immigration locally. Alternative explanations?
• instead of presenting FoM as reciprocal, FoM was depicted beneficial for a narrow demographic of British people, likely Remainers already
• assumed they will win so resorted to lazy arguments on FoM, preaching mainly to the converted, depersonalising the other end of FoM, EU citizens in the UK.

Question from audience: would @peoplesvote_uk learn from these campaign mistakes?

UK confirming plan to compel millions of citizens to pay to apply to keep legally established rights feels important and unprecedented. But barely a media ripple today - with a few honourable exceptions noone appears to be asking tough questions. So here are a few:
1. How is this scheme compatible with Article 8 of the ECHR, enshrined in UK law via Human Rights Act, protecting right to family life? Has Govt taken legal advice on prospects of a challenge by EU citizens? If so what did it say?

2/ An estimated 53,000 female EU migrants are victims of domestic abuse. Abuse is often characterised by control of both money and documentation, both things women will need to prove their right to stay.
3/ Women make up 79% of the EU migrants deemed ‘economically inactive’ and may struggle to provide records from HMRC or DWP. Of these, 139,000 women are ‘economically inactive’ due to caring responsibilities.

The EU isn't punishing the UK for Brexit. We're punishing ourselves. Losing all the benefits of EU membership IS punishment, in the same way as no longer being able to use the fitness equipment, weights or other facilities is punishment for quitting the local gym. 2/25
If you cancel your gym membership, you might well put on weight. But you wouldn't then turn around and say "Hey, the gym punished me for leaving by making me fat!" That would be absurd because it's the consequence of losing your gym membership, not the fault of the gym. 3/25

Ok, folks: let’s talk a bit of shop as this is really getting rather upsetting now. The situation of us 3.7 million EU27 citizens in UK is *not* the same as that of Britons here. Yes, we are all EU citizens at this point. But the issues are not the same. Please respect that. 1/
*All* of us EU27 citizens, under the *best case* scenario have to:
- Apply so we can stay in our own home.
- Undergo a criminal records check even though we are here legally, with children 10 years + to be matched against government watch lists.
- Pay for all this. 2/
System for that:
- Will work only on Android phones. What other application routes will look like remains unclear.
- Won’t be fully developed for some time (only being trialled for the first time next month).
- Would have to be able to cope with 1000s of applications a day. 3/
