Samuel Patten, the longtime DC lobbyist who pleaded guilty to failing to report his lobbying work for Ukraine back in August (see: buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…) and agreed to cooperate w/ federal prosecutors including Mueller, had a status report due today. We didn't learn much:
The actual joint status report was filed under seal, so we don't know what's going on exactly. It was still a joint report and today was the day it was ordered to be submitted by the court back in October, so the timing isn't surprising or an attempt to bury this news.
Notably, Sam Patten also admitted to, but was not charged with, organizing the purchase of tickets to the Trump/Pence inauguration for a foreigner through a straw purchaser. This was detailed in documents filed on the day of his plea.
Patten's work in question significantly overlapped with Paul Manafort's and Foreigner A has been identified as Konstantin Kilimnik, who was charged alongside Manafort by Mueller's office with obstruction of justice in June. Patten's plea was announced on Aug. 31.
There's been no real movement from Mueller or the US Attorney's Office for DC, who brought the Patten case, since then on these topics, but today's filing suggests issues in Patten's plea remain so sensitive that prosecutors aren't willing to say anything publicly about them.
Judge Berman Jackson granted the request to file the sealed status report in the Samuel Patten case, likely due to his ongoing cooperation. Next status report is due Feb. 11.
