#electrifyeverything 2018 recap (1/1) I’ve been trying to figure out the cost/benefit of my⚡️ life. TL/DR it’s f&$!g complicated. But *I think* I have a few takeaways...
#electrifyeverything (2) If I’ve done my math right I’m all in at ~$95/month for my electricity which is almost exactly what my combined gas/electricity spend was the year before. Which sounds ok BUT it’s complicated....
#electrifyeverything (3) I added a 200 + mile range Bolt and now charge entirely at home (used to charge half a 100 mile range leaf at work daily). All in its roughly same electric miles but I now charge them all at home - lots of load!
#electrifyeverything (4) Speaking of that Bolt...the clear electrification winner is the car. We drove ~16000 miles. If that had been in our old Prius which still gets a respectable 40 MPG it would have cost ~$1,200 (16000/40*$3/gallon). That’s about what we spent on ALL ⚡️
#electrifyeverything (5) BUT that doesn’t work unless you have solar offsetting significant amounts of that consumption. We added 3.5kw to our existing 5 kw and can have daily consumption hit 70kw! Solar is dramatically reducing electrification costs at individual level
#electrifyeverything (6) Speaking of costs - rate design f$!1n matters! We didn’t switch our rate plan this year from the standard. That cost us at least $200 we could have saved on the EV TOU rate plan 🤦‍♂️
#electrifyeverything (7) Failing to switch rate plans was an own goal. But a massive year end bill was worse. Solar is awesome (0$ bills for 5 months!) but PGE true up at year end which stuck us w/BIG year end bill. It averaged out fine ($95/month) but paying half at once hurt 🤕
#electrifyeverything (8) Speaking of annual true up and NEM - that $h!7 is confusing. I mean I get the concept but paying nothing one month and several hundred the next is rough. People remember the big bills they forget the small ones...
#electrifyeverything (9) But all these numbers DONT include my solar 💰, adjust for new EV miles, or reflect sane rate structure I should have been on. So for the avg person to compare before/after costs to see if this makes financial sense - good luck. Entrepreneurs please!
#electrifyeverything (10) Which is why it’s been good to have fellow travelers like @JustinGerdes @brucenilles and @energysmartohio to help figure this all out. Seriously these guys are experts. Pick their brains!
#electrifyeverything (11) but all in all I think economics will look good in 2019 and far more importantly I’m 🏃 on sunshine and I feel fine 😎Let’s help the masses figure this out. They’re going to love it 🙌
#electrifyeverything (12) One more important takeaway - I have winter peaks. I bank NEM credits in the summer (🙏solar). Rate design change is a comin’?
