This has impressively strange statements from all three speakers. So some simple facts (thread)
1) No unilateral extension of Art. 50. Extension requires all Member States and the UK to agree. That’s Art. 50(3) of the TEU
2) The other two speakers speculated about what it would take for other member states to agree. Yes, a game changer. But that’s certainly not a new government with a new negotiation plan from scratch. “We don’t like it, let’s start over” is not a likely option.
3) And it seems utterly wrong to say an extension would only happen to stop Brexit. The EU doesn’t want a no-deal Brexit. If there’s a realistic plan for how to get to agreement - that could be the game changer required for extension.

A general lesson about politics: Politics cares little about institutions or procedures. It cares for its position. So “don’t go a Referendum” or “the Single Market doesn’t matter” tend to be flexible arguments (short thread).
Let’s start with the latter. In the Brexit debate you hear “leaving the single market is a disaster” from one side, “the single market doesn’t matter” from another. The very same people might very well say the opposite when it comes to Scotland and the single market is the UK’s.
Somewhat to my own surprise it turns out that things are not that different when it comes to referenda. Apparently the 1997 referendum about an assembly in Wales saw the same people who now say referenda are holy vote against its result

In law Art. 50(3) of the TEU does not mention a limit to the capacity to extend the Brexit deadline
In fact there are things that make UK membership beyond certain deadlines with the UK leaving afterwards problematic: think of the multi-year financial framework, but the case in point is: elections to the European Parliament.

Early on in the Brexit debate I have decided that I do not have a position. I am not British. But I do have a side as an academic: my goal was to keep the debate honest. Face pay-offs. Upsides. Downside. What would that debate be like?
As to the main issue of Brexit: The Brexit case is: we don‘t want to be part of an integration system. EU critics are right to say that there‘s a lot of integration. EU critics are right to say that integration goes beyond the economic. No need to insult the EU or our neighbours.

For clear perspective, when APC took over power, 24 states could not pay salaries, GDP declined from avg 6% to 2%.

The Buhari govt had to extend ₦1.9 trillion to states to enable them meet their salary obligations and over ₦600bn in budget support facility.
The Buhari administration had to offset debts/liabilities inherited to the tune of ₦7 trillion due pensioners/salary arrears, JV cash calls, Paris Club overdeductions, Oil Subsidy debts, refund to states for road, contractors etc.

The Charter of Fundamental Rights (CFR) codifies a body of case law into a series of 50+ articles built ON TOP OF the European Convention on Human Rights.
The ECHR was built and ratified by convention in 1953. Way before the EU & is distinct from it. We are not losing the ECHR post-Brexit (thus, keeping the UK's HRA)

However, the CFR is tied into membership of the EU & is often the conduit by which the ECHR is activated.
And this is a problem. Since question LS the CFR hasn't answered yet, are points of case law (yet to be determined) not statute. The CFR codifies a number of key elements of legislation (including clarification) across a body of cases across all 28 member states.

Thread: I am hearing a lot of talk about a second referendum and going back to the question of reforming #freemovement, including this report from @sundersays on @nick_clegg's conversations around #Europe. I think this is a dangerous route to go. Here is why.
First, I am sure that governments across the EU have concerns about abuse of free movement. But this abuse, while serious, is marginal and receives very little attention from media and public opinion on the Continent.
Second, while some minor reforms to #freemovement are not only possible but also necessary, as @COdendahl and myself explain here - cer.eu/publications/a…, they won't happen any time soon and will surely be less likely to happen if a perceived 'blackmailing' comes from UK again

#thread on Friday I talked to Meina, a new member from the team.
She was telling me that in order to focus for a certain task when switching from another, it helped her to either meditate or play the guitar for 10 minutes, which I think is another way of meditation #thread 👇
She told me that sometimes she didn't do that, but lately, she was told to go do that by @emecibelli.
This is an example of great leadership IMHO.
A lot of times, managers push people to work nonstop not realizing that by doing that, they're making people be... 👇
... slower because they're not aware what their direct report really need to work better, happier and faster.
As leaders, we all need to listen and understands much more the people that work with us, because after all, a company is not more than a sum of people :).

1/ Some thoughts on the ECJ and EASA (EU air safety agency)
Art 66 of the EASA regulation allows non-EU countries to join [stay in] EASA if they have a treaty with EU applying EU aviation law.
This is the ECAA treaty, text here - eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/…
2/ There are two rules on the ECJ in the ECAA treaty.
First, Art 16 requires non-EU states to allow *some* jurisdiction of ECJ if their national courts receive disputes about EU aviation law. This can be less than EU members provide for, but it can't be non-existent (Annex IV).
3 Second, Art 20 ECAA treaty says that in the event of a dispute over interpreting EU aviation law, the parties *may* ask the ECJ to rule. If they don't do so, then a political process of settling disputes applies. But they still can't ignore ECJ case law.
