1/ Let's discuss this remarkable article in @nytimes about the importance of universal daycare. No, not the @KathaPollitt op-ed from Sunday. An article from 1974 about conditions in the Soviet Union, which sound, well... see if this remind you of anything. nytimes.com/1974/12/17/arc…
2/ The USSR heavily subsidized daycare. Without that, some families had to "fend for themselves," mothers might "quit their jobs in order to raise their children." Worse, some families "resort" to the "traditional" reliance on extended family. Call yourself a workers' paradise!
3/ Some "middle-class intellectuals" didn't think the daycare was very good. They "disliked having children raised so much of the time by people outside of the family during the early, formative years." But even they "conceded" these are niche concerns, inapplicable to most.

The 20 Percent Button is a useful heuristic for our politics: Imagine a button that instantly doubles productivity of labor market’s most productive quintile and causes least productive quintile to drop out of the labor force. Do you push the button? (RT your answer: Yes/No?) 1/
Top quintile is already more productive, so gain from doubling there exceeds loss at the bottom; tradeoff leaves our economy more productive and output higher. If you want, stipulate policy to tax/transfer some gains from top to bottom; everyone’s consumption can be higher. 2/
Posing this to a group of business school students last night elicited simultaneous “of course yes” and “of course no” reactions, then gasps at the disagreement. I've posed the question more broadly, but thus far I've found people prefer not to answer. 3/ city-journal.org/growth-for-who…

1/ It's interesting to watch the confusion that The Once and Future Worker causes for conservatives accustomed to a particular set of debates. A fine example is this from @JonahNRO in his conversation with @MichaelRStrain on the @JonahRemnant podcast last week:
2/ Jonah suggests my goal is "to spend a huge pile of money"; that "what we're talking about is spending a lot of money to make lives better for workers and what not." That's not at all what I'm talking about, as I explained to him on his previous podcast.
3/ A "Keynesian sugar high" is obviously not desirable or sustainable. Where would the money come from? And once we've built the ten-lane underground super highway, what next? Keynesian spending is supposed to be countercyclical, it doesn't remedy structural problems.

1/You can ignore #bitcoin. But at your own peril.

The House of Fiat sits on shaky ground. It wobbles, lurches, insidiously eroding wealth one day at a time. Fiat is unsound, soft money designed to explicitly steal from taxpayers through opaque economic policy schemes.
2/The further we stray from sound money, the flimsier economic foundation- subject to oscillations manifesting as economic boom & bust cycles, resonating downstream for years, building & feeding upon one another until systemic tension bursts collapsing economies worldwide.
3/Instead of addressing this foundational error, the Fed and CBs offer liquidity “retrofits” pouring fiat money/credit into an inherently unstable house & assure us it’s safe to occupy! So called Fed liquidity reduces behavioral friction inducing wild market gyrations.

There is an aspect of the debate on the costs and benefits of the euro that I have been finding increasingly unsettling. 1/n
It is the (intentional?) opacity of the anti-euro crowd with respect to the alternative exchange rate and monetary policy regime they would recommend for the countries that, in their view, would be better off outside the euro. 2/n
I have never seen an article or blog post in which the alternative is specified clearly. 3/n

The Once and Future Worker is an important book, and I hope it gets a lot of attention. It challenges conventional wisdom on trade, immigration, and labor market policy in an attempt to synthesize conservative rhetoric with a pro-working class agenda.
Other reviewers haven't fully appreciated how heterodox this book is.

Ostensibly a conservative manifesto on the virtues of work, it's really a Marxian critique of globalization, open immigration, and the commoditization of labor across three decades of neoliberal hegemony.
