1/ Vandalism, ongoing harassment, even assaults. Decades after the civil rights movement, black families around the country are still experiencing hate in their own homes. propublica.org/article/get-ou…
2/ We've received hundreds of tips about harassment by neighbors and hate incidents in homes targeting people of various races and religions. We also identified nearly 140 anti-black hate crimes in people's homes or by neighbors.
3/ In Delano, Minnesota, a black family’s home was broken into in March 2017 and a warning was spray-painted on the walls: “Get out.” The vandals left a note, too: “Next time it’s going to be fire.” startribune.com/black-family-i…
4/ A man and his family were the only black residents of their Columbus, Ohio, cul-de-sac. Someone rang his doorbell or banged on his garage 25 to 30 times a night, almost every night, and the suspect would call the man racial slurs from the darkness.
5/ This also happened in Ohio.
6/ In Spokane, Washington, we found cases of possible white supremacists committing violence against black families.
7/ Occasionally, these crimes are successfully prosecuted. Our partner @news21 reported on a black Pennsylvania family that carefully documented years of harassment by their neighbor, who was eventually convicted and sentenced to 2-4 years in prison.
