A draft amendment of the Intermediary Guidelines Rules has been issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, ostensibly for dealing with the #FakeNews and #misinformation. We have published a FAQ on the draft amendment.

The draft Rules remove the safe harbour granted to intermediaries such as WhatsApp, Google, Facebook and your telecom service provider if they do not comply with these Rules.
In order to stay safe themselves, they would have to tell you every month that you are not allowed to post, upload or send content that violates these Rules.
A major point of contention is the requirement for intermediaries to use automated tools to filter content sent / posted by users, and for intermediaries to build a system that can be used to trace who originally sent a message.

In April 2018, the Union I&B Ministry floated a tender to contract an agency to monitor social media posts of citizens, including their "emails" and "historical communications", to gauge their opinions about government policies, and create "360-degree view of people." (2/n)

First of all, @NASSNigeria has never used the @INECNigeria budget as a weapon. The @bukolasaraki-led @NGRSenate has always been committed to ensuring that INEC receives the necessary funding for the 2019 elections.
Secondly, @NGRSenate passed the @INECNigeria budget on October 16th without touching any of the sectors you mentioned. However, as you can see here, the Executive came back to request a different funding method. Link: vanguardngr.com/2018/11/vireme…
