We are going to begin our second session!
We'll discuss policies and solutions to counter misinformation in this session.
We shall also discuss whether more regulation is the way forward.
@KarnikaKohli @ghanshyamtiwari @berges @skjain2091 @Shehla_Rashid @Shshk
.@Shehla_Rashid people believe in fake news because of their inherent confirmation bias. Fake news is enmeshed in propaganda.
#fakeisnotreal
.@ghanshyamtiwari the responsibility lies on us to see whether the communication in our community is toxic or not.
Breaking false negative stereotypes is upto us.
We need not react in a technocratic manner to fight fake news. We also cannot react in an autocratic manner because we are not an autocratic country.
We have to engage and build harmonious content. .@ghanshyamtiwari
@berges we strongly believe that educating people is more important than busting fake news.
#Fakeisnotreal
.@skjain2091 fake news has a lot of socio economic implications. Certain websites are created in the govts name and scamming people.
.@skjain2091 ground level policing is required to counter fake news.
.@KarnikaKohli I do not believe in any regulation from the government and the technology platforms. Digital and media literacy is the way forward.
.@Shshk the government came out with the draft Intermediary guidelines that mandates traceability and deploying automated content filtering to remove "unlawful" content.
@Shehla_Rashid I reached out to @AltNews to bust the fake news that was being spread about me. Verified handles were posting insinuations about me.
@skjain2091 reporting to the police on an online platform is not the correct procedure. Please visit a local police station to submit a written complaint.
@skjain2091 the police can direct people to not follow a particular news item because it's fake. UP police has done that. We have to look at solutions to fake news in a holistic manner. Our job has gotten harder due to Twitter and Facebook.
@berges we have tools to remove harmful content on Sharechat. Once the content is taken down, we don't put it back on our platforms.
.@berges we believe platforms should have a registered office in India. We agree with some provisions of the new draft Intermediary liability guidelines.
.@ghanshyamtiwari the govt has given a long leash to the multinational corporations that spread fake news. Disappointed with the debate around fake news in Parliament.
.@ghanshyamtiwari this is an era where citizens are the more credible champions than the government. A government that stands against privacy will not care about fake news.
.@ghanshyamtiwari our law enforcement is reacting very slow to problems that need urgent action. Citizens have to take leadership.
.@KarnikaKohli definition of media has changed. There is too much distrust in the traditional media.
Regional media has really grown in our country buy we don't see any fact checkers there.
Platforms run on the business model of virality and fake news. We have to rethink these business models.
.@ghanshyamtiwari
.@skjain2091 we need information sometimes from Facebook and Twitter that these platforms don't give us. That is why we need the new Intermediary guidelines.
@KarnikaKohli the regulations won't work. Apart from media literacy and digital literacy, we have to promote a culture of skepticism. There are no short term solutions. We need to educate all sections of the society.
.@ghanshyamtiwari we need more discussion on the new Intermediary liability guidelines before they are passed. Politicians need to indulge in more positive campaigns.
