We are living in a mild form of the post apocalyptic future. For a new nucleus to form there must be an escape from the churn. That will probably take the form of internal retreat into closed affinity groups until practical interplanetary travel is possible.
People are turning inward as they lose trust in institutions, as protection from the madness that seems rising all around. The fear is the madness won't stop.
There is a kind of tension in the silence. The monster in "Bird Box" isn't our worst fears. It's the vision of an unforgiven picture of ourselves, dripping with shame and covered with despair. It's unbearable and we must find a place to be loved.
The frontier needs to open again. Internally or externally.
