Brexit showed the public on both sides that politics was no longer about Pareto optimality but zero-sum. The creeping approach is over and the frontal attack phase has begun.
The choices have become stark and it is impossible to misunderstand the contradictions any longer. Two societies have self-identified in the West. The question is who will rule.
The Back to the Center people have been marginalized because they think the fundamental question of "who rules" can still be negotiated whereas the firebrands on both sides are yearning for a test of strength. Unfortunately neither side can win outright.
Hence Brexit -- and the shutdown -- may resemble a 75 round bare knuckle brawl. Both sides have the potential to box for a long, long time.
