This isn't some revolutionary insight (I'm very basic, after all), but it bears repeating: infrastructure is the fundamental thing that enables you to do everything else.
In my shop, that means good lighting, heat, ear protection, comfortable shoes, compressed air and outlets where I need them, trash cans, dumpster service, etc. In my office it's printers (what, you don't have 7 printers too?), tape dispensers, trash cans, shelves, etc.
I turned on the faucet in my house this morning and clean water came out. I flipped a switch and lights came on. I got to work this morning by driving on roads and across bridges. Infrastructure.
I wrote about this in the context of data science a few years ago too. m.signalvnoise.com/infrastructure…
Invest in your personal infrastructure, and in your community's shared infrastructure. You can't make or do anything great if you don't have the underlying infrastructure in place.
