Monday morning Brexit digest, and we start with the not-at-all surprising news of a cross-party group of MPs saying if the PM cannot find a consensus then it should fall to a group of MPs
This is a quite obvious development in a situation where there is no Parliamentary confidence in either the Prime Minister or the Leader of the Opposition, and both are failing to play their roles as laid down in the constitution. And it has been building.
The PM has if anything devalued her position further this morning by making a comparison to the Welsh referendum - where she personally opposed the outcome and voted against it. Off the scale incompetence....
Meanwhile we have a letter from Brexiteers calling for all conservative MPs to vote against the PM's deal. Including a quote from one of my tweets (fame!) - but their problem is the will of the house is overwhelmingly against them thesun.co.uk/news/brexit/81…
Meanwhile as numerous of us have said, the EU could consider changes to the agreement as negotiated, but only to help get it over the line in Parliament, They have no confidence in the PM's ability to do this
Obviously wiser counsel would be for the PM to work with those in Parliament who want a deal, but if she cannot, those MPs will continue to coordinate as they are already doing. With no-dealers out in the cold as the clear minority. /end dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6…
Addendum. The EU letter will issue this morning. They had to do this otherwise it further damages the PM's credibility. But it obviously will not say anything to change the current understanding of the backstop.
