35 M in clinic for routine check-up. Otherwise healthy. Up-to-date w all vaccinations except the flu shot bec of egg allergy (respiratory distress/hives w eating scrambled egg in the past). He wants a flu shot. W/c of the ff types of influenza vaccine can he receive in clinic?
(1/) Answer: any of the above. 1/2 got this right! 👏 No serious reaction to egg-based flu vaccine (inactivated influenza vaccine [IIV], live attenuated [LAIV]) have been reported in patients with egg allergy. Hence, age-appropriate use of IIV and LAIV (2-49 yrs) recommended. 🌟
(2/) ACIP Guideline recommends that if egg allergy consists of only urticaria, any licensed and age-appropriate flu vaccine can be given routinely. 🌟📌❤️
(3/) ACIP Guideline also recommends that if the reaction consists of urticaria + angioedema/resp distress/ lightheadedness/recurrent emesis, vaccine administration should be supervised by a health care provider able to manage allergic rxn in the outpatient/inpatient setting. 📌
(4/) Recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV) is not egg-based and can be given as well. Post-vaccination observation period specific for persons allergic to egg is no longer recommended. For more info: cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6…
