This ex-top official's dire warning is based on his "inference" from "the public record", e.g. Trump's performance in Helsinki. That's what this "clear and present danger" is about: NatSec types, amplified by MSNBC, who find it "shocking" that Trump is nice to Putin in public.
Laufman headed DOJ's counterintel division until Feb 2018, so he likely played a role in May 2017 decision to open a CI probe of Trump just revealed by NYT. Note that he makes no reference to any evidence -- it's all about enforcing Cold War orthodoxy, as NYT report suggested. 
To be clear: I’m not a Trump supporter, & I do think he’s a clear danger. But not because he’s nice to Putin, but for policies like attacking working people, nixing Iran deal, & climate denialism that threatens human survival — all sidelined by this Cold War conspiracy peddling.
